2026-08-27

This drink is extremely easy to make without any cooking, and can be whipped up using a regular household blender.

  • Main ingredients:

    • Oats: 1/2 cup (instant or quick-cooking oats are recommended for a smoother texture; if using rolled traditional oats, it is better to soak them beforehand).

    • Dates: 3–4 (pitted dates are recommended, such as Medjool dates, for the best flavour).

    • Milk: 1.5 cups (whole milk gives a richer taste, and plant-based milks like oat milk, coconut milk or almond milk work perfectly too).

  • Optional flavour and texture boosters:

    • Ice cubes: 1 cup (to provide a refreshing, slushie-like coolness on hot days).

    • Cinnamon powder: A pinch (about 1/4 teaspoon). Cinnamon and dates are a match made in heaven, instantly elevating the Middle Eastern/Mediterranean flavour profile.

    • Chia seeds or flaxseeds: 1 teaspoon (to add dietary fibre and thickness).

Method

  1. Prep the dates (essential tip):

    • If your dates are quite dry and firm, it is recommended to soak them in warm water for 5-10 minutes beforehand, or soften them first using a small amount of warm milk. This not only allows the blender to chop them up more finely, but also ensures a completely smooth texture without any bits.

  2. Add ingredients in order:

    • Pour the liquid (milk) into the bottom of the Flying blender jug first (this protects the blades and prevents dry spinning).

    • Next, add the oats, pitted dates, and cinnamon (if using).

    • Finally, add the ice cubes.

  3. Blend on high speed:

    • Switch on the Flying blender, start at a low speed, then turn it up to maximum speed, blending continuously for 45 seconds to 1 minute.

    • Check the consistency: ensure the dates and oats are completely pulverized and emulsified, resulting in a smooth, slightly thick, milkshake-like liquid.

  4. Serve:

    • Pour into a tall glass. If you like a refreshing layered look, you can scatter a few oat flakes on top or garnish with a tiny pinch of cinnamon.
